Stranded in Damaturu Children going to school |
Many school children in Damaturu
today have to trek long distances to their schools as KEKE NAPEP operators have
stay off the roads in the state capital.
Our correspondent who monitored
the situation sighted many parents waiting endlessly on road sides with their
children to covey them to school without any of the tricycle operators in
sight.
Many school children with their
parents were also stranded walking long distances in the rain after schools
were closed.
The action of the tricycle
operators is as a result of yesterday’s clash between them and the Nigeria
police in the state over non registration of their machines.
The protest led to several hours
of disruption of movement in the tow especially at the central roundabout where
the protesting tricycle operators vandalized some traffic lights and burnt
tyres as well as blocked the road.
At the Yobe State University Bus
stop, many students were seeing waiting to be transported to the university but
there was sight of the tricycle operators in the park.
A staff of the University from
the Student Affairs Office informed that the school management has made an
arrangement with Yobe Line transport services and ten busses have been deployed
to the park to ease the movement of student to and from the university.

Meanwhile a pocket of some
tricycle operators were sighted dropping off school children.
Adamu Audu is one of the tricycle
operators who came and dropped off some children at St. Mary’s School in the
Jerusalem area of Damaturu.
Adamu told me that he was in the
mechanic throughout yesterday when his colleagues were rioting and so he must
look for money to make up for what he spent at the mechanic yesterday.
“He however condemned the action
of his members, saying that, you cannot fight with government. We should just
do what the government has asked us to do. How can you operate a machine
without plate numbers? Everybody should have it. I have all my documents here
sir. I see no need why I should stay at home. I spent money at the mechanic
yesterday and I cannot just sit at home today,” Adamu said.
For now, no one is sure how long
the action of the tricycle operators will last.
KEKE NAPEP is the most reliable
public transport services in the metropolis after the ban on motor cycle was
effected in the state since 2013.
